BIG RAPIDS – Maddie Alber plays a key role in several sports for Crossroads Charter Academy, and volleyball is on her agenda right now.
She’s also in other sports including, softball, equestrian and bowling.
“I’m more into working on softball in the summer,” Alber said. “I play a lot of coed.”
This marks her third volleyball season. She’s a leftside hitter.
“I’ve kind of moved around here and there,” Alber said. “This year, we’re really focusing on it. I think I’m pretty good at coverage and on being scrappy.”
Crossroads plays at Manistee Catholic Central on Thursday.
“We’re really good, I think we’re going to win conference this year,” Alber said. “We know each other well and what we’re going to do as a team and we can trust each other quite a bit.”
One aspect to work on is “not beating ourselves before we step onto the court,” she said, “and not playing toward the other team’s potential instead of ours. We know what we need to work on.”
“Our biggest strength this season will be the fact that we really didn’t lose much of our team from last year,” Big Rapids coach Kristin Yates said. “We lost a couple of big players but the team already knows how to work together and they don’t have to focus as much on learning each other’s playing styles as they do fine-tuning what they already know.”
