BIG RAPIDS — The Crossroads Charter Academy boys basketball team squared off against Walkerville Friday in a key West Michigan D League battle.
The Cougars came out on top with a 66-45 victory. The win gives CCA (8-1, 7-1) sole possession of second place in the D League behind Manistee Catholic Central (6-1, 6-0).
“I give the kids credit,” head coach Julian Castillo said. “With Christmas break, we had a long break. As a coach, you’re never satisfied. I don’t want to cheat them. If I let them play poor, I feel like I’m cheating them.”
Britton Angell led CCA with 24 points and Ethan Davis and Jackson Wickes tallied 11 points, respectively. Cody Carlson added six points on two 3-pointers.
Dillon Brown led Walkerville with 27 points.
“Cody Carlson came out and took charge” Castillo said. “He hit shots and hit the boards pretty hard. Jackson is consistent and Britt is Britt. I think he did pretty well.”
Leading 22-18 after the first quarter, the Cougars outscored the Wildcats 18-4 in the second quarter to take a 40-22 halftime lead. The Cougars carried the momentum in the second half and led by as many as 28 during the game.
